Low Pressure, High Payoff—If You’re Prepared
Conventional wisdom used to say XC riders should run high pressures and narrow tires to reduce rolling resistance. But as GMBN and the World Cup XC field have shown, that’s changing—fast. Today’s fastest riders run 2.4” tires at pressures below 20 PSI, all in the name of grip, comfort, and speed on rougher terrain.
Lower pressure increases your tire’s contact patch, helps it conform to roots and rocks, and ultimately gives you more confidence on technical climbs and descents. But there’s a catch: without the right wheel and rim combination, dropping into the low-teens means flirting with disaster—burping, rim strikes, instability.
